The 19th Hole

There haven’t been many changes in golf ball design, especially when it comes to USGA approval. While clubs have undergone significant changes over the last four decades, the rules governing characteristics of golf ball technology have gone relatively unchanged for the last 35 years. That all changed last month with the USGA ruling on OnCore’s Evo golf ball, which was tested and found to be conforming to the Rules of Golf.07

A few years ago, I was golfing in a tournament in Nevada. One of my playing partners, whom I’d just met an hour before, hit a hole-in-one on a 162-yard par 3 hole. That was incredible to witness, and something I’ve come close to doing a few times.
According to Doug Burkert, President of the National Hole-in-One Association, the chance of getting a hole in one, or ace, from 150 yards happens a lot more than most people realize. The National Hole-in-One Association has for the last 32 years, provided data on hole-in-one probability since they have a vested interest: They provide hole-in-one insurance coverage at golf tournaments, with more than 300,000 to date. Here are a few more details about hitting a hole-in-one.

“I tell people that I have played some of my worst golf on some of the best courses in the world.”
– Rick Stedman
Though my quote above is not listed in the 786-page “The Gigantic Book of Golf Quotations,” there are still more than 3,000 other gems to keep you entertained for hours. Quotes within this massive tomb range from the hilarious to the thought-provoking, and offer wit and wisdom on every stroke and situation from tee to green to clubhouse. Here are just a few examples:
“I’ve been playing the game so long that my handicap is in Roman numerals.” – Bob Hope
“The most important shot in golf is the next one.” – Ben Hogan
“The person I fear the most in the last two rounds is myself.” – Tom Watson

Though his book was published nearly 20 years ago, Bob Charles’ Golf for Seniors is as timeless as its author. Charles' philosophy is simple, and that is to start simple. Charles gives tips for seasoned golfers and those players who have taken up the game in their later years. He begins by explaining the proper way to grip the club, which arguably is one of the most important aspects of a beginning golfer, or seasoned one for that matter. Through a series of photos, the reader is shown the correct and incorrect ways to stand, swing, pitch, chip, and putt.
Sir Bob Charles has the dual distinction of being the first left-handed golfer to win a major championship and the first player from New Zealand to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He won the 1963 Open Championship after a grueling 36-hole playoff with Phil Rodgers. Overall, Charles won six times on the PGA Tour, the last coming at the Greater Greensboro Open in 1974. H also amassed more than 75 international victories.
As snowbirds begin thinking about heading south for the winter, a favorite Texas location to consider is Fairway RV Park, about 160 miles north of Houston. Offering year-round services, Fairway RV Park is four miles south of Loop 224 in Nacogdoches on Highway 59 South. It sits on 110 wildlife-filled acres, and borders Hole 14 of Woodland Hills Golf Club, which offers daily, weekly, and monthly rates.

Not many golf courses have opened during the last several years, and certainly only a handful this year. One celebrated opening of late is the new Tom Doak-designed golf course at Dismal River Club in Mullen, Nebraska. The Red Course, as it is called, complements the White Course which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2006.
The stunning panorama of the Sand Hills regions of western Nebraska is evident from every hole on the Red Course. Doak, who employs a minimalist approach in his course designs, took what Mother Nature offered and molded it into the Red Course, which should be on future short lists of quality courses in the U.S.
AHEAD’s new Thermal Regulation technology, which is making its debut with five styles in the company’s 2014 men’s apparel collection, is helping golfers maintain optimum body temperature based on the day’s changing weather conditions.
Thermal Regulation is a polymer (hollow) shell yarn that utilizes phase change and controls the production of moisture before it begins, explains Bill Godden, AHEAD’s director of apparel. The material, Godden says, absorbs, stores, and releases heat for optimal thermal comfort, while the shell absorbs, stores, and releases excess heat.

As part of its initiative to address pace-of-play issues in the game of golf, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has introduced a series of educational tools designed to educate the golf community on the factors that influence the time it takes to play the game. Matt Lauer, Robin Meade and 2004 U.S. Senior Open champion Peter Jacobsen narrate new series of videos. The new tools include a series of six videos that address the following topics:
• Why traffic jams occur on the course• How course setup impacts pace of play• Improving pace of play around the green• When disaster strikes• Alternative formats

Professional golfer and NBC/ Golf Channel commentator Peter Jacobsen is this year’s recipient of the Payne Stewart Award. Sponsored by the Southern Company, the Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the values of character, charity, and sportsmanship. The past winners have all distinguished themselves through their respect for the game, the PGA Tour’s tradition of charity, and their ability to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
The award honors the memory of Stewart, an 11-time PGA TOUR winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member who died tragically during the week of the Tour Championship in 1999.
